Everything about the third week of South Puget Sound League football was big — the plays, the scores, the records broken.
Kentwood started it off demolishing Mount Rainier on the road in the early game of the day winning 70-0. With the win, the Conquerors improved to 3-0, and for now are atop the league standings.
Kentwood takes on Kent-Meridian at 7 p.m. Friday at French Field.
Kentlake put together the highest scoring SPSL game in history with its 76-55 victory over SPSL South foe Puyallup.
Tahoma held off Auburn Riverside at home in a 47-30 win. Kentridge was shut out 45-0 on the road at Auburn while Kent-Meridian was the lone exception to the big number night with a narrow 27-24 loss at Thomas Jefferson.
Kentlake senior quarterback Steffin Church had a record breaking night with eight touchdown passes on 13-of-18 finishing with 395 yards while the Falcons rolled up 917 yards of total offense.
Compare that to the week two loss to Kent-Meridian when Kentlake tallied a respectable 299 yards of offense.
Five different players scored on passes from Church for the Falcons: Jordan Laurencio, John Morasch and Marshall Jones had two apiece while Caleb Mathena, who rushed for 173 yards on 15 carries, and Riley Higgins each punched it in once against Puyallup.Kentlake also had six interceptions, one each by Laurencio, Morasch, Jones and Axelson while Mathena had a pair of picks.
Laurencio also led Kentlake with 11 solo tackles.Tahoma’s Damon Funk put together a three touchdown, 216 yard rushing night on 25 carries.
The Bears had a 40-15 lead at halftime but had to hold off a pesky Ravens squad which tried to close the gap.Tahoma hosts Auburn Friday at 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, Kentridge was down 14-0 at the end of the first quarter against Auburn then gave up another 21 points in the second quarter.
The Chargers weren’t able to recover.Kentridge faces Mount Rainier at 7 p.m. at French Field Saturday.Kent-Meridian could not sustain its momentum after beating Kentlake week two for the first time in more than a decade.
A close game blew up for the Royals in the fourth quarter when the Raiders of Thomas Jefferson scored 21 points to take the game away.
The Royals face a major test Friday against the Conks.
