Two members of Kentwood’s dominating defense were named to the Associated Press’s all-state football team.
The Conks’ senior defensive lineman Josiah Bronson was a first-team selection for 4A schools, along with fellow senior Kaleb Swain, a defensive back.
Kentwood head coach Rex Norris said both players were pivotal to building the No. 1 rushing defense and No. 1 total defense in the South Puget Sound League. He said Kentwood also led the state in scoring defense heading into week 10.
“Both (players) had special years,” said Norris, whose team finished atop the SPSL Northeast conference with a 5-0 record, 8-2 overall, but lost to Bellarmine Prep in the playoffs. “A lot of the things they were able to accomplish was because of each other and their teammates.”
Swain led the state with seven interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns and two more that he advanced to the one yard line, Norris said.
Bronson finished with six sacks, 13 tackles for loss and contributed the second most tackles overall on the team, according to Norris.
Senior offensive lineman Kingston Suka earned a second-team nod for Tahoma. The AP named Chiawanna running back Austin Urlacher as the 4A player of the year.
Swain was also named the all-SPSL 4A North defensive back of the year. Tahoma junior quarterback Amandre Williams was selected as the conference’s offensive back of the year, and his teammate, Suka, shared the prize for offensive lineman of the year with Kent-Meridian’s Tanner Torr. Kentwood’s linebacker and special teams coach Ed Kramer was named assistant coach of the year in the SPSL North.
Bronson, Swain, Suka, and Kentlake senior Matt Burley were all nominees for the All-State football game.
