A number of elements needed go right for the Tahoma volleyball team to earn the No. 1 seed in the upcoming South Puget Sound League volleyball tournament and the last one happened Wednesday night.
After finishing the regular season with an 8-1 record, the Bears finished in a three-way tie for first with Kentridge and Todd Beamer. The tie-breaker started with a random drawing that forced Tahoma to wait from the sidelines as a tie-breaking match between the Chargers and Titans would decide their fate. Kentridge defeated Beamer 3-0 Wednesday night, which, based on an interpretation of the SPSL handbook, moved Tahoma to the No. 1 seed.
Officially, all three teams are considered co-champions of the North conference.
Another three-way tie was decided Wednesday between Kent-Meridian, Kentwood and Mt. Rainier. Kentwood defeated Mt. Rainier to earn the No. 6 seed.
The SPSL volleyball tournament starts tonight, Thursday, with Kentwood facing Graham Kapowsin at 5 p.m. at Kent-Meridian High School and Kentlake traveling to Mt. Rainier to take on the hosting Rams at 5 p.m.
Tahoma faces Curtis on Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. at Todd Beamer High School. The winner of that match will play the winner of the Kentridge vs. Emerald Ridge match scheduled for 1 p.m. at Todd Beamer.
No matter what happens over the next couple of days in SPSL 4A volleyball, Tahoma will be in one of the top four seed positions.
