The District 3 4A Volleyball Tournament is well underway at Kentwood High School. With all three local teams done with their first matches and headed into their next, here’s what has happened so far.
Kentlake lost to Curtis earlier this afternoon, 0-3. Their game against Rogers, who lost to Gig Harbor, started at 6 p.m.
And even though Tahoma beat Kentwood 3-0, the fight to get there seemed tough at times for the No. 2 seed Bears.
Every set started with a good rally; both teams were on the scoreboard and the numbers were matching most of the time. But, after a couple questionable calls by a line judge, resulting in two lost points for Kentwood, Tahoma’s fire got stoked and they started gaining a lead. They took it to the end with a 25-19 win in the first set.
The second set was neck and neck, but Tahoma had a one-point lead. Kentwood called a timeout, which seemed to relieve the Bears’ momentum slightly because a serving error was made. The teams were tied at 14, then Tahoma got a four-point lead on the Conks at 20-16.
After a second Kentwood timeout, another Tahoma serving error occurred, making the score 20-17.
Then Tahoma got the ball back, scored a point and Kentwood made two hitting errors in a row, making it game point in the second set, 24-17.
Tahoma’s only freshman on the team, Emily Smith, wins the set for the Bears with a back row kill straight to the ground on Conk territory.
Kentwood didn’t let it get to them, though, because the Conks came out firing in the third set. Tahoma returned Conks’ junior Kelsey Newcomb’s serve with an overpass, which was struck down by another Conk at the net.
Kentwood led 2-0 but had a serving error, giving Tahoma control.
The score was then tied up at two points and Kentwood’s Erin Gould, freshman, makes a kill. That celebration, however, was quickly followed by a kill from Tahoma’s Natalia Burdulis, senior.
But that’s what the Bear’s needed to get fired up. Kentwood only scored one more point before the Bear’s made a run for it with a nine-point streak, making the score 15-4, Tahoma.
More back-and-forth rallies ensued, followed by four back to back serving errors for both teams.
The Bears made two errors on match point, first a serving error and then a hitting error by Smith. But redemption would soon follow. Smith turned it around with kill that would end the match, 25-17.
Tahoma will play the winner between Timberline and Kent-Meridian at 8 p.m. Friday at Kentwood High School.
The Conks aren’t out of district play yet. They will play the losing team from that matchup at 8 p.m. as well.
