Tahoma’s Taylor Clarin was in the right place at the right at the right time twice against Curtis Saturday night.

Clarin scored both goals in the Bears win over the Vikings at Maxwell Stadium in the second round of the 4A state girls soccer tournament.

First, Clarin took a cross on a set piece from senior Brie Hooks, and put it in the net in the seventh minute of the match.

“I felt like it was in slow motion,” Clarin said of the play which led to Tahoma’s first goal.

In the 15th minute Curtis answered on the attack when Megan Weaver put it in to tie it up at 1-1.

It was a frenetic pace in the first half as both teams played fast, aggressive and physical soccer but at halftime it was still knotted up.

“It was nerves,” Clarin said. “It was a big game, the seniors last home game ever.”

In the locker room, Clarin said, Tahoma coach Jason Johnson offered his team a directive to counter Curtis.

“Johnson just told us to find passes and work the ball around because they were so aggressive,” Clarin said.

In the second half, Tahoma settled down but the tone remained aggressive and physical, with a player on each side getting a yellow card.

Then in the 60th minute Clarin was in the right place at the right time again, this time to put Tahoma ahead for good.

Off a corner kick from the left side by Hooks, Clarin was in front of the goal as the ball dropped in.

“It was just a fumbled mess,” Clarin said. “The ball was just knocking around and I just pushed it in with my body.”

She knew the Bears still had 20 minutes left to play in the match.

“We can’t stay content with it,” Clarin said of her thoughts after she scored the go-ahead goal. “We had to keep pushing through and playing hard.”

Thanks to the 2-1 victory, Tahoma will take on the winner of Skyline and Puyallup, which also played at 7 Saturday night. The semifinal game will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

After the match, Tahoma huddled together in the biting cold near the bench as Johnson told the girls he couldn’t be more proud of them.

“If we all work hard together, we can be a physical team, a solid team,” Clarin said. “It means a lot to the seniors for their last year of high school to go out this way, to get this far.”
