Tahoma built on its lead in the South Puget Sound League North division with a pair of one-run wins over Kentridge and Thomas Jefferson Wednesday and Thursday.
First, the Bears won a nine inning thriller 2-1 over the Chargers, as senior co-captain Kaila Wilkinson drove in the tying run on a squeeze bunt then junior Shelby Carter brought in the winning run on a sacrifice fly.
Then on Thursday Carter kept up the offense starting the game against Jefferson with a two-run shot over the fence in the bottom of the first.
“I just saw an inside pitch coming my way so I was just sitting back and waiting for it and it just went,” Carter said.
It was her first pitch double to left field to start off the sixth inning that helped Tahoma come back from being down to Jefferson 3-2.
Lisa Maulden got on base then Sammii Jimenez ripped a double down the third base line that scored Carter and Maulden, putting the Bears ahead 4-3.
As Carter watched Jimenez at the plate, she said she knew, “any ball in the gap or in the outfield, I’m scoring.”
Jimenez walked the first batter for the Raiders in the top of the seventh then the Bears defense locked down as the next two batters were out on fielder’s choice and the final batter popped out.
Tally up two more complete games for Jimenez who has won nine this season.
Tahoma is now 9-0 in SPSL play and 12-1 overall.
“It’s amazing,” Carter said. “I can’t express any other feelings. To come out and beat all these teams where we came from last year. We’re really just starting to get a good chemistry as a team. To keep going forward as we are, it’s just unbelievable.”
The Bears face Kentlake on Tuesday.
As of Friday morning, Kentlake was alone in second place behind Tahoma, the only team that has blemished the Falcons record.
Kentlake second baseman Erika Smyth told the Reporter on April 9 that the Falcons have the re-match “circled on the calendar” but first they had to focus on playing Auburn, a game that was postponed Tuesday due to weather, and Kentridge, whom they play Friday night at home.
Carter said Tahoma needs “to stay more consistent with our hitting and I know we can” because the team has hit well off Kentlake’s pitching once this year.
“We just need to attack them,” Carter said. “We have a better mindset going into this game. Now we have a little bit of an up. Now we’re going in saying, ‘We’re going for it all this time.'”
