Saturday will be a state championship affair for track and field, baseball and fastpitch.

Boys and girls golf wrapped up Wednesday past the newspaper deadline.

FASTPITCH

The Tahoma Bears will be playing Monroe 10 a.m. today, Friday, in the opening round of the 4A state championship tournament at Dwight-Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane.

If the girls win they will play again at 4 p.m. If the Bears win the team plays at 10 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals for a shot to play for the title.

Tahoma took third coming out of the West Central District 3/Southwest District 4 tournament played at the Boise Creek Sixplex in Enumclaw Saturday and Sunday.

The girls opened the tournament beating Auburn 6-5. The Bears went on to beat Enumclaw 9-8, which sent the team into the semifinals.

Tahoma fell to Puyallup 2-1 in a tough pitcher’s dual. The Bears No. 1 pitcher, Danika Dennis, injured her finger in the second inning. Sophomore Kyla Damerow came in and did not give up another run.

“Kyla came in without a hitch,” coach Christina Millan said. “She inherited some base runners, but after that, that was it. Our girls battled. We were there, but (Puyallup) is a great team all the way through.”

Damerow said she was nervous coming in after Dennis was injured.

“When I did give up hits my outfield backed me up and my infield backed me up” she said. “It’s fun to work together. It wasn’t that nerve racking until the seventh inning when we wanted to hold them to two runs. It’s a lot easier to make it more fun and not worry about the stress part.”

Millan said Dennis will rest her finger and hopefully be ready to pitch in the state tournament.

Kentwood opened the tournament with a 12-7 loss to Union. The Conks next lost to Battle Ground 5-1 in a loser out game.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Tahoma girls won the 4A district track and field meet Saturday at French Field scoring 112 points.

The Kentwood girls took 12th with 23.5 and Kentlake 14th with 21.

The Tahoma boys took fourth with 42.5 points, the Conks were 12th with 24.

TAHOMA

Girls

Aliya Wilson took the winning medal in the 100 meters in 11.77 seconds and third in the 200 in 24.69.

Olivia Ribera ran third in the 100 in 12.07 and fourth in the 200 n 24.90.

The 4×100 relay team of Aliya Wilson, Alisha Wilson, Tierra Wilson and Ribera won the event in 46.33

The 4×200 team took second in 1:42.92 with Aliya Wilson, Abby Jean Blackwell, Tierra Wilson and Kylee Swartz.

In field events Ginny Mehl won the shot put pegging 44 feet, 6 inches. She also won the discus at 137-0.

Mehl took third in the javelin reaching 129-01.

Tenley Mjelde cleared second in the pole vault at 10-03.

Alisha Wilson was second in the long jump at 18-07.50.

Boys

Dawson Besst ran third in the 3,200 meters in 9:28.85.

Bobby Say took second in the triple jump at 45-05.

KENTWOOD

Boys

The Conks 4×400 relay team won in 3:22.89 with Omari Brown, Daniel Gaik, Camden Phelps and Harsimran Singh.

Keetaan DeWitz ran third in the 110 hurdles in 15.30.

Girls

Nicole Soleim ran third in the 3,200 in 11:22.59.

KENTLAKE

Girls

Jordan Fong took second in the shot put reaching 39.09.5 and third in the discus at 124-09.

Marylinn Auelua grabbed fourth at 38-02.

BASEBALL

It will be a high noon showdown for Kentlake and Kentwood baseball at 1 p.m. today, Friday, at Safeco Field.

The Conks and the Falcons are facing each other in the semifinals of the 4A state championship tournament. On the other side of the bracket at 10 a.m. Skyview and Puyallup are playing. The winners of each game will play in the title game Saturday at 4 p.m.

Kentlake

Kentlake beat Sumner 9-5 Saturday at Heritage.

Jordon Wright threw five innings picking up the win for the Falcons. He struck out two, gave up four runs, three were earned, on seven hits with one base-on-balls. He threw 77 pitches.

Dylan Mackie threw in relief giving up two hits, one earned run, striking out one and walking two.

Wright also battered Sumner at the plate along with Caleb Jaime and J.J. Gerarden who hit one out in the fourth to break a 4-4 knot.

Jamie hit 3-3 and scored three times. Gerarden went 2-3 scoring once and hitting in three RBIs.

Wright hit 2-3 with one RBI.

Kentwood

The Conks beat Kennedy Catholic 3-2 in the quarter final Saturday.

Cole Trotignon earned the win going five innings, giving up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. He gave up one home run.

Chase Martin picked up the save giving up two hits and throwing two strikeouts.

Trotignon knocked in one RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Shane McGuire went 2-3 at the plate with a double, scoring one run and stealing one base.

Cade Harris went 1-3 at the plate with one RBI.

GOLF

The 4A boys and girls golf championship began Tuesday and wrapped up Wednesday, past the press deadline.

The girls played at Meadowwood Golf Course and the boys at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Liberty Lake, Wash.

BOYS

Two Kentwood and two Tahoma boys made the cut to play the second day of the championship tournament.

For Kentwood, Nathan Cogswell was seventh shooting a 70 and Riley Ohashi was 38th shooting 77.

Colt Sherrell from Tahoma was 23rd shooting a 74 and Parker Kneadler was 38th shooting a 77.

GIRLS

Kentwood golfer Katelann Soth finished 10th on the first day shooting 76 and Jocelyn Dacuag, also from Kentwood, was 38th shooting 82.

Abby Goodell from Tahoma shot 96 and did not make the cut to play the second day.
