The Tri-City Americans defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-3 Friday night at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.
The T-Birds take on the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday at 7:05pm at ShoWare Center.
Tri-City (30-7-0-0) opened the scoring at 4:51 of the first period when Jordan Messier scored. Brendan Shinnimin and Malte Stromwall had the assists.
Adam Hughesman scored at 10:49 of the first to give Tri-City a 2-0 lead. Shinnimin and Messier combined again on the assists.
The T-Birds had an apparent power-play goal waved off midway through the period when. The referees ruled that Americans goalie Eric Comrie was pushed into the net with the puck.
Tri-City outshot Seattle 13-3 in the first period.
The Americans scored three goals in 1:36 in the second period to take a 5-0 lead. Hughesman scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 5:58, then Mason Wilgosh scored a power-play goal at 7:20 and Patrick Holland scored at 8:34.
Colin Jacobs got the T-Birds on the board at 9:21 of the second with a penalty shot goal. Jacobs was slashed from behind on a clean breakaway to draw the penalty shot. On the penalty shot Jacobs stickhandled down the ice and beat Comrie with a quick shot through the legs.
Tyler Alos scored a power-play goal at 17:50 of the second to cut the Americans lead to three goals. Dave Sutter worked the puck from the left point to Shea Theodore at center ice just inside the blue line. Theodore put a slap shot on goal that Comrie stopped. The puck rebounded to Alos in front of the net and he slammed home the rebound.
The Americans led 31-13 in shots after two periods.
Seattle (16-20-0-1) had a goal by Connor Honey taken off the board early in the third period. Honey had beaten Comrie when the Tri-City goalie gave the puck away in front of his net. The officials went to video review after Honey’s goal and determined Holland had scored on a prior play when a shot by Holland went through the net and then around the boards. Play continued until the next stoppage of play, which was when Honey scored. Holland’s goal came at 2:44 of the third and was unassisted.
Shinnimin scored at 17:57 of the third to get the Americans seventh goal. Hughesman and Holland had the assist.
Shea Theodore scored a power-play goal with 17 seconds left in the third to get the T-Birds third goal. Braeden Laroque and Luke Lockhart had the assists.
Tri-City outshot Seattle 45-23 in the game.
Seattle started Daniel Cotton in net and he made 38 saves on 45 shots and his record is now 0-4-0-0.
Comrie made 20 saves on 23 shots and his record is now 13-3-0-0.
T-Birds single game tickets for the 2011-12 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
