No Flies On Doodle has made a spectacular leap into older company at Emerald Downs.
Sunday, the 4-year-old filly made it 2-for-2 on the young season with a powerful 1 ¾-length victory over the favored Hallelujah Trail in the $50,000 Hastings Handicap for fillies and mares. The Washington-bred daughter of Storm Blast ran six furlongs in a stakes record 1 minute, 8 1/5 seconds and paid $9.20, $3.80 and $2.60.
Gallyn Mitchell rode the winner at 118 pounds for trainer Vann Belvoir and owners Swag Stables (Keith and Jan Swagerty) and Appassionato Stables (Phil Sanken).
Hallelujah Trail, backed heavily at 3-5, rallied for second place but she made no impact on the winner. Ridden by Ricky Frazier at 118 pounds, Hallelujah Trail paid $2.20 and $2.10.
It was one length back to defending champion Clair Annette, Seth Martinez riding at 121 pounds, and a $2.20 show payoff. Barbara’s Love finished fourth, followed by Elusive Surprise and Puff Maddie.
Breaking from the No. 5 post-position, No Flies On Doodle stalked Clair Annette from the outside through a half-mile in 44 2/5, moved up to take command midway on the turn, opened a clear lead into the stretch and held sway to the wire.
“Vann (Belvoir) called me in the morning and asked me what I thought of the race,” Mitchell said. “I told him I thought Clair Annette had a lot of speed and I didn’t want to go with her on the lead. It was like she read our minds because she did exactly what we wanted. Down the backstretch, she didn’t fight me at all. She switched leads at the three-eighths pole and then went right by Clair Annette. She’s just an awesome filly and always gives 110 percent.”
A Swagerty homebred by Storm Blast, No Flies On Doodle has compiled a 6-2-0 record in nine starts with earnings of $133,552, including a $27,500 check for the Hastings. Last year she won the Washington’s Lottery Handicap and the Washington Oaks, the latter race at 1-1/8 miles, though Belvoir said Sunday the filly is better around one turn.
Next up for the older fillies and mares is the $75,000 Washington State Legislators Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs on Monday, May 31.
The Belvoir-Mitchell connection struck again in the ninth race with Peaceful Reign, a 4-year-old son of Liberty Gold who turned in a remarkable season debut while running 5-½ furlongs in 1:01 2/5. The winning time was only one tick off the track and world record shared by Willie the Cat and The Great Face.
Peaceful Reign, claimed for $30,000 in 2009, finished 4-½ lengths clear of Rooster City and paid $4.20.
