Medals and memories from the 4A state tournaments

High school spring sports came to a close this weekend with the conclusion of the 4A state tournaments.

Track and Field

The 4A track and field state championship ran from May 26 through Saturday at Mount Tahoma High.

Tahoma

The Bears track and field teams did what the Bears do at state. Win… a lot.

The girls team took the silver with 61 points behind Issaquah with 74. The Tahoma girls moved up from fifth place last year.

The boys team tied Bellarmine Prep for fifth with 29 points, a big leap from its 11th place finish last year.

Girls

The Tahoma girls came home with two gold medals in the relay events.

The 4×100 team won in 47.39 seconds with Tierra Wilson, Olivia Ribera, Alisha Wilson and Aliya Wilson running.

The team runners came back and took second in 1:40.48 in the 4×200.

In the 100 meters dash Aliya Wilson took third in 12.53 and Ribera fifth in 12.60.

In the 200 Ribera ran fifth in 25.64 and Aliya Wilson eighth in 26.74.

Breanna Glover ran 17th in the 1,600 in 5:26.07 and Peyton Shinnick placed 17th in 11:57.61 in the 3,200.

In field events Ginny Mehl took the silver in the shot put reaching 42 feet, 9 inches and the bronze in the discus at 125-04. Mehl grabbed another silver in the javelin spiking it at 135-09.

Madi Bucy took fifth in the javelin at 119-02.

In the pole vault Tenley Mjelde placed 13th clearing 9-09.

Alisha Wilson placed seventh in the long jump at 17-02.

Boys

Deszmon Humphries carried home the gold in the shot put with a throw to 59-09.

Bobby Say took 11th in the triple jump at 43-04.25.

In running events Austin Brown ran sixth in 22.84. He took the bronze in the 400 in 49.14.

In the 1,600 Graeme Schroeder placed eighth in 4:18.35 and Tristan Houser 11th in 4:22.13.

Schroeder took fifth in the 3,200 in 9:17.93 and Dawson Besst 10th in 9:28.18.

In the 110 hurdles Caleb Brown grabbed sixth in 14.94.

The 4×400 relay team of Andrew Sears,Tristan Houser, Graeme Schroeder and Austin Brown ran seventh in 3:25.89.

Kentwood

The Conks girls team took 11th with a score of 22.

Brittany Woke came home with a gold and bronze from the state meet.

Woke grabbed the championship in the triple jump at 38-05.25 and third in the long jump 18-04.25.

Nicole Ajayi placed 12th in the high jump at 4-10.

In the 100 dash Alexia Thomas placed sixth in 12.74.

The 4×100 relay team of Lauren Gross, Zaria Jones, Hailey Suit and Alexia Thomas came in fifth in 49.10.

Kentlake

The Kentlake girls team took 32nd with four points.

Avalyne Peters took sixth in the high jump clearing 5-03.

Jordan Fong placed eighth in the javelin reaching 115-06.

For the boys Andrew Dixon came in ninth in the discus at 141-01.

Baseball

The Kentwood Conquerors went 2-0 in the regional round of the 4A state tournament to secure itself a spot in semifinals.

Kentwood shutout Woodinville 9-0 to punch its ticket to the championship game at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.

On May 28 the Conks faced Skyline for the 4A title and lost 2-1.

After finishing the regular season with an 11-1 conference record, the Conks finish the season 24-6 overall.

Softball

The, then, defending 4A state champions Tahoma Bears softball team finished the regular season with a perfect 18-0 conference record.

The Bears entered the postseason with the chance to defend its title.

Following the West Central District 3 4A softball tournament, Tahoma entered state as the No. 5 seed.

The 4A state tournament began May 27 at the Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane.

In the first round, Tahoma lost 16-0 to University.

The Bears advanced to a loser out game later that day but lost 9-2 to Jackson ending the Bears title-defending season.

Tahoma finished with an overall record of 23-3.

Soccer

After finishing the regular season with a 9-4-0 conference record, the Tahoma Bears boys soccer team entered the postseason.

The Bears went 2-0 in the regional round in order to enter the semi finals on May 27.

Tahoma beat Snohomish 4-2 Friday to secure its spot in the championship game where the Bears faced Wenatchee.

Tahoma lost 1-0, ending its season second in state.

Overall, the Bears were 18-5-0 in the 2015-2016 season.

Tennis

Kentwood send two doubles teams to the state championship May 27 through Saturday at Columbia Basin Racquet Club and Richland High School.

Kathryn Araki and Danielle Mendoza played Kelsey Zhong and Reanne Lee from Skyline in the first round losing 6-0, 6-4.

Araki and Mendoza came back and won the next round over Hannah Mietzner and Candace Han from Jackson 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

The girls lost the next match to Anna Davenport and Kaylynn Noyd from Wenatchee 6-4, 4-6,6-1.

Judith Nguyen and Sam Tate played two matches losing both. The girls opened with a 6-0,6-0 loss to Sydney Wallace and Mackenzie Schreiner from Union.

The pair lost next to Davenport and Noyd from Wenatchee 6-3, 6-1.

Tahoma singles player Kianna Rem lost her opening match to Amila Gogalija from Mountain View 6-0, 6-0. Rem lost her next match to Yasmina Qazi from Wenatchee 6-0, 6-0.

Golf

Girls

The Kentwood girls golf team took seventh with a score of 52.50 at the 4A state golf championship at Sun Willows Golf Course May 24-25.

Katelann Soth took 10th shooting 74 in the first round and 80 in the second for a total of 154.

Jocelyn Dacuag was 17th with a first round score of 78 and second of 79 with a 157 total.

Three Tahoma golfers played the first day but did not make the cut for the second day.

Abby Goodell shot a 99, Gillian Huylar 99 and Abigail Mozzone 102.

For Kentlake Cassidy Sawyer shot an 86 the first day just missing the cut for the second round.

Boys

The Conks scored a 58 taking fourth in the state as a team.

Mason Koch placed fifth with a total score of 147, missing the leaders by two strokes. There was a four way tie at 145 for first. Carl Underwood from Richland won in a playoff. Koch shot a 72 the first day and 75 the second.

Nathan Cogswel took 18th with a 71 and 82 and a total of 153.

Kentwood players who played the first day but did not make the cut were Victor Gallevo shooting 82, Spencer Kim 82 and Brayden Seims 92. The cut was 81.

Tahoma golfer Justin Pederson took 39th shooting 79 the first round and 92 the second with a total of 171.

There were three Tahoma golfers who shot the first day round. Luke Taylor shot an 83, Colt Sherrell 85 and Parker Kneadler 86.

Jack Roth and Isaac Foster both shot the first day for Kentlake. Roth hit 85 and Foster 90.
