The top four finishers from last month’s Pepsi-Cola Handicap, Koala Beach, Posse Power, Newfound Man and Silk Street, are all nominated to the Seattle Slew Handicap on Sunday, July 25.

At 1 1/16 mile, the Seattle Slew is the final tune-up for 3-year-olds in advance of the 1 1/8 mile Emerald Downs Derby on Sunday, Aug. 15.

The Pepsi-Cola was one of the meet’s most entertaining events. Koala Beach, ridden by Ricky Frazier, prevailed by a nose over 3-to-5 betting favorite Posse Power, ridden by Francisco Duran, with Newfound Man a neck back in third place. The final time of 1:34 1/5 was easily the fastest ever recorded by a 3-year-old at Emerald Downs.

Koala Beach (8-4-2-1-$121,693) is a triple stakes winner at Emerald Downs, but the Pepsi-Cola was his first as a 3-year-old and the Harbor the Gold gelding is 2-1-0 in routes.

Posse Power (9-3-3-2-$105,940) has acclimated nicely at Emerald Downs. The Posse colt has run twice in Auburn, winning the 6 ½-furlong Auburn Handicap on a sloppy track before losing the heartbreaker in the Pepsi-Cola.

Lightly raced Newfound Man (4-2-0-1-$28,038) performed gallantly in the Pepsi. Despite a wide trip the Newfoundland gelding gained a short lead in mid-stretch, then yielded grudgingly to Koala Beach and Posse Power.

Silk Street (8-1-2-0-$38,041) also ran a good race in the Pepsi. The Southern California shipper by way of England was beaten less than three lengths and also raced far wide on the second turn.

Saratoga Boot (6-1-2-1-$25,450), runner-up to Posse Power in the Auburn, looks to rebound after a third-place finish as the 1-to-1 betting favorite in a June 13 allowance race.

Mr. Mad Max (7-1-2-1-$13,828) might enjoy the longer distance after finishing third and second to Fisher Creek in $25,000 claiming races at 6 and 6 ½ furlongs. And trainer Howard Belvoir nominated Cat On Base (5-1-2-2-$21,250) and Cyber Bell (5-2-2-0-$16,235), a pair of improving Washington-bred geldings.
