The Kentwood High boys soccer team did it once to open the season.
Last week, the Conquerors did it again, knocking off powerhouse Thomas Jefferson 1-0 in a pivotal South Puget Sound League North Division game.
Cody Crook scored the game’s lone goal in the 25th minute on an assist from Jared Fuller. The loss dropped Jefferson to 6-2-2, but, the Raiders remained in second place heading into play Wednesday night.
Kentwood continued its winning ways three days after beating Jefferson with a 3-1 win over Kentlake. Kentwood’s Stefan Bangsund was a one-player machine in the game, recording all three of the Conquerors’ goals.
Jacob Grabowski notched Kentlake’s lone goal of the game.
Tuesday night Kentwood continued its winning ways with a 2-1 defeat of Kentridge.
Bangsund picked up right where he left off against Kentlake, notching the Conquerors first goal off a Jose Castro pass at 16 minutes, then Keaton Gray sealed the win with an unassisted goal at 79:45.
The win gave the Conquerors, 8-0-3, a two-game and seven-point cushion in the race for the SPSL North crown.
Meanwhile, Kentlake split a pair of games last week, knocking off Auburn Riverside 3-2 and falling to Kentwood 3-1. Ryan Utz, Matt Butler and Brady Johnson all tallied goals in the win over Auburn Riverside.
Kentlake bounced back from its loss to Kentwood with a 4-0 victory over Kent-Meridian Tuesday. Butler, Utz, Johnson and Greg Gordon had a goal each.
Tahoma kept pace for a playoff spot with a 1-0 victory over Mount Rainier Tuesday night. Jordan Downing netted the unassisted goal at the 66 minute mark.
That victory keeps the Bears in third place at 6-2-2 with 20 points. Jefferson beat Tahoma in the first meeting between the teams this season so it hangs onto second place.
The top five teams from the SPSL North advance to the postseason. With five regular-season matches remaining heading into the weekend, Kentwood is a virtual lock to advance. Kentlake may be on the outside looking in but is in contenton for a postseason berth in sixth place with a record of 4-5-2.
