On Nov. 10 Kentwood senior cheerleader Alexia Thomas was named the CenturyLink High School Athlete of the Week.
“(She) was selected Athlete of the Week based on her dedication to academics, community involvement, leadership and athletic performance,” according to an article on the Seahawks website.
Currently Thomas has a 3.75 GPA and is taking classes both at Kentwood and Green River College.
The article said she is on track to receive both her high school diploma as well as her Associates of Arts degree this coming spring.
Aside from doing well in school, Thomas helped to organize a back to school drive that collected a number of school supplies and backpacks for an elementary school. She also is involved in other annual fundraisers including ones for Toys for Tots and the Susan G. Komen foundation, the article stated.
She has also volunteered as a camp counselor for the Covington Parks and Recreation Department’s track and field camps.
Last season, she was named Most Valuable Player for the 2016 track and field season.
“Alexia is a prime example of a leader in all that she does and inspires her teammates to do their best both on the mat and in the community,” the Seahawks article said.
Thomas is the eighth athlete of the week this year to be chosen by the Seattle Seahawks, CenturyLink and Q13 Fox.
She was recognized on the field last Sunday during the Seahawks home game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to the Seahawks website, the three organizations teamed up to honor student athletes who show “exemplary performance both on and off the field.”
Each weekly student athlete receives an in school presentation where they are presented with a personalized Seahawks jersey, a custom Seahawks football, two game tickets including sideline passes to a home game, a CenturyLink High School Athlete of the Week patch for their letterman jacket and their school’s Athletic Department receives a $1,000 grant.
