Kentwood High graduate Demitrius Bronson helped Eastern Washington University’s football team get one step closer to a Big Sky conference title in a 31-28 victory over University of California at Davis Nov. 10.

Bronson, a junior at Eastern, added 63 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground for the Eagles in the win, according to information provided by EWU’s athletic department staff.

A 2008 Kentwood High graduate, Bronson started his college career at the University of Washington, where he played sparingly in 2009. He did not play in 2010 before transferring to Eastern in 2011. Bronson, who missed EWU’s first two games with a hamstring injury and carried just five times in his first two games of the season rushed 13 times for a career-high 113 yards and a touchdown against North Dakota Oct. 6, which was a season-high for an Eagle running back at that point in the schedule.

Bronson also tallied 83 yards on the ground along with a touchdown in Eastern’s Nov. 3 win over Cal Poly.

As far as the final home game for the Eagles Nov. 10, the Aggies were poised to pull off the upset with a long drive on their final possession, but David Gaylord blocked a 52-yard field goal attempt by Brady Stuart with 46 seconds left to preserve the Eagles win and keep Eastern’s Big Sky Conference championship hopes alive.

Northern Arizona fell 35-29 in three overtimes to Southern Utah, meaning Eastern will play for at least a share of the league title at Portland State Saturday. Eastern, ranked fifth in The Sport Network NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Top 25 Poll, is now 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big Sky.

The win was Eastern’s 11th in the last three seasons when it has trailed or been tied in the fourth quarter. Of Eastern’s six Big Sky wins this season, five have come by a combined margin of 21 points — two six-point wins and a trio by just three points.
