It’s all starting to come together for Kentwood High senior Steven Warner.
Warner served notice last week during the South Puget Sound League meet at French Field that he indeed has what it takes to challenge for a state crown, delivering his finest time of the season at the SPSL meet, bringing home gold with a time of 14.61 seconds.
“I am just hoping to finish the year strong and help put Kentwood back on the map a little bit,” Warner said.
Kentwood’s Darrius Coleman was the only competitor close to Warner in the competition, taking second with a time of 14.77.
“He was right behind me,” Warner said. “Having that every day behind me, pushing me, helps.”
Warner was nearly as good in the 300 hurdles, taking third with a time of 39.59.
The Conquerors also received some head-turning performances from their girls, particularly Holly DeHart and Dana Wareham.
DeHart took second in the 100 meter (12.81) and third in the 200 (25.60). Meanwhile, Wareham delivered a first-place time of 59.41 in the 400 meter.
DeHart and Wareham — along with Aisha Goodlow and Quincie Proctor-Guyton — also provided key legs for Kentwood’s 4 x 200 relay team, which took home top honors with a time of 1:43.33.
Meanwhile the Kentlake boys 400-meter relay team would not be denied a third time this season by Todd Beamer.
Instead, the contingent of Tayler Angevine, Matthew Cowan, Zach Smith and Cody Arp set the pace, blistering the oval in a personal-best 42.76 seconds to bring home the gold medal from the SPSL meet.
“It was a pleasant surprise,” said Kentlake coach Jim Hewson. “It was big because they’ve been after it for a long time. They know they’ve worked hard. This was the first time they’ve beaten Beamer.”
Now the Falcons are well on their way, Hewson added.
“It builds on their confidence to say, ‘Now we can beat them,’” he said.
For Kentlake’s Smith, taking part in the 400 relay was just part of the equation to success last week. The Kentlake senior also delivered first-place performances in the long jump, 23 feet, 4.75 inches and triple jump, 46-4.
“Whether he will win state in both this year, we’ll see,” Hewson said. “When (Smith) needs to, he steps up and gets a better jump.”
Smith added a second-place finish at the SPSL meet in the 100 meter, turning in a time of 11.06.
The top 10 finishers at the league meet advanced to the West Central District meet, which began today at Mount Tahoma High.
