Kentlake suffered its first loss of the season Monday night 10-8 at the hands of Auburn Riverside.
Riverside jumped all over Kentlake in the bottom of the first inning when it scored six runs.
“Riverside played well,” wrote Kentlake coach Greg Kaas in an email Tuesday morning. “We found ourselves in a 6-0 hole in the first. Our kids never gave up and battled back from a 10-4 deficit in the seventh and had a chance to tie or take the lead.”
The Falcons scored two in the top of the third and fifth then mounted a rally in the top of the seventh when they scored four runs to close the Ravens’ lead to two before Riverside shut it down.
Kentlake’s outfielders led the team at the plate as Lexi Engman went 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored while Erin Crowley was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
For Riverside, Jamie Koenig was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Meghan Lingren was 1-for-3 with a double and four RBIs while Hannah Melick was 3-for-4 with a triple.
Kentlake and Tahoma were set to play on Wednesday and Thursday after the Reporter’s deadline.
With Kentlake and Tahoma both suffering a single loss to different opponents this season, the two game series between them could well decide who wins the SPSL North crown or like last season, leave the teams tied for first place at the end of the regular season.
Meanwhile, last week was about make up games as Tahoma, Kentlake and Kentwood all squeezed in as much as they could.
Tahoma finished the week with wins against Auburn on Friday and Auburn Riverside on Saturday morning.
Seniors Kiley Dunn, Emily Miller, Shelby Carter and Sammii Jimenez paced the Bears in the 8-1 victory over the Trojans.
Dunn went 2-for-2 with a single, a double and two RBIs, Miller was 2-for-4 with a single and an RBI, Carter was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while Jimenez was 3-for-4 with three singles and an RBI. Jimenez also picked up the win on the mound for Tahoma.
The Bears took on the Ravens at Auburn Mountainview High — the 3A school has a turf field — at 9 a.m. on Saturday coming away with a 12-4 victory.
Dunn had another solid game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of triples, while Jimenez, who is Tahoma’s No. 1 pitcher, helped herself out driving in three runs on a 2-for-4 effort.
Miller was 3-for-4 with a pair of singles, a double and three runs scored.
Junior shortstop Hayley Beckstrom was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and Lisa Maulden, senior first baseman, put together a 3-for-4 hitting day with a pair of singles, a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Jimenez also picked up another win in the pitcher’s circle and boosted her season record to 11-1, the same as the team’s record in the South Puget Sound League North Division, remaining solidly in second place behind division rival Kentlake.
On Friday, Kentlake got its first games in of the week when it put away Kent-Meridian at home in a double header, winning the first game 22-0 and the second 19-0.
That was followed up with a 7-0 victory over Kentwood at home Saturday night.
The Falcons erupted for a six run third inning as every player in the line up had at least one base hit in the game.
Engman started the hitting off with a single to left field. Crowley knocked a single to left center. Erika Smyth had an infield single to Kentwood’s short stop.
With the bases loaded, Crowley then scored on a passed ball, followed by Smyth scoring on an error.
Next Libby Riehl doubled into the right field corner. Brittany Jacobsen followed that up when she loaded the bags again with Falcons on a single to left.
Kellie Nielsen then drove in Riehl and Jacobsen when she smacked a double down the left field line.
Pitcher Hannah Sauget drove in Kentlake’s last run with a single to right which sent Nielsen in to score.
Sauget pitched the complete game shut out, giving up five hits while allowing two walks.
Defensively, Smyth was a highlight reel, making four different tough plays at short stop during the game.
In the top of the first, Smyth ended the inning when she dove to stop a ball hit up the middle and flipped it to Richardson, who was covering second.
Smyth then snagged Shian Kelly’s fly ball in the top of the third when it went deep into foul territory.
In the fifth inning she made an over the shoulder catch to end the inning after Jaylynn Rohweder had hit a two-out double to left center.
Then in the top of the sixth with the bases loaded, Smyth caught a line drive by Allison Newcomb then tossed the ball to third base to catch Brianne Cossey off the bag for a bang-bang double play.
It was Kentlake’s 13th straight victory of the season.
That wrapped up a rough week for Kentwood with the loss to Kentlake being its third straight.
On April 28 Mount Rainier beat Kentwood 7-3 then on April 29 Auburn Riverside won 11-7.
Still, Kentwood is still in the hunt for the fifth spot in the playoffs, explained Conquerors head coach Jason Wisor in an email.
Wisor wrote that Mount Rainier was at 5-9 heading into play on Monday with three games left to play, a pair against Kentridge and a game against Tahoma.
The Conquerors need the Rams to lose at least one of those games and they’ll “slide into the playoffs,” Wisor wrote.
Kentwood stood at 7-7 through play on April 30.
