Jockey Gallyn Mitchell from Enumclaw is the 2010 winner of the Lindy Award and will be honored in a special ceremony Sunday in the winner’s circle at Emerald Downs.

Mitchell is the track’s all-time leading rider with 1,248 wins and is the only jockey to ride all 15 seasons at Emerald Downs. Mitchell currently ranks third with 75 wins and is on pace for his 15th consecutive top five finish at Emerald Downs. The 90-day season concludes Sunday, and both Mitchell and Durkan Award winner Howard Belvoir will be honored after the fourth race.

Named in honor of Lindy Aliment, the longtime clerk of scales at Longacres and Emerald Downs, the Lindy Award is voted on by the jockeys and has been presented annually since 1985 to a rider for accomplishment and sportsmanship throughout the 90-day Emerald Downs meeting.

“It’s an honor to get this award from my fellow riders,” Mitchell said. “This is one of the achievements that I’ve been trying to get every year.”

Mitchell, 48, was a 2010 finalist for Santa Anita’s prestigious George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, and also was a finalist for the 2010 Washington Racing Hall of Fame. Born in Denver, Colo., Mitchell and wife Denise live in Enumclaw, where he often organizes fundraisers for children with terminal illnesses.
