Mark Glatt, 1991 Auburn High School graduate, enjoyed a banner week at Santa Anita.

Sunday, 4-year-old Kentucky-bred It Tiz scored an $18 upset in the $75,000 Megahertz Stakes for older fillies and mares on turf for Glatt and owner Allen and Susan Branch of Los Gatos, Calif. Lilly Fa Pootz, winner of a $7,500 claiming race at Emerald Downs in 2009, finished second, and Grade I Beverly D winner Éclair de Lune was a disappointing fourth.

Friday, Reba Is Tops scored a nose decision over Linda Lou in a $62,500 optional claiming event on Santa Anita’s unique hillside turf course. With Joe Talamo steering the 7-year-old through an opening on the rail, Reba Is Tops ran about 6 ½ furlongs in 1 minute, 13.06 seconds and paid $3.20. There were no takers at the claim box.

Glatt, son of longtime Northwest horsemen Ron Glatt, has conditioned It Tiz through a 6-for-15 career in which the $170,000 daughter of Tiznow has finished fourth in three Grade I events.

Reba Is Tops, meanwhile, has a 13-6-4 record in 28 starts with earnings of $408,629, good for 20th place on the all-time list of Washington-breds. And she might not be finished yet. She’s nominated to Sunday’s $70,000 Wishing Well Stakes on the hillside turf course—entries will be drawn Thursday.

Reba is about to begin a new career in the breeding shed. Jarnig and co-owners Eric Schweiger and Kenny Marshall have chosen to breed her to Broken Vow next month in Versailles, Ky. Standing for $25,000 at Pin Oak Stud, Broken Vow ranked 31st nationally in 2010 progeny earnings with $5,049,295.

Incidentally, Glatt and the Branches campaigned a Washington-bred daughter of Broken Vow named La Tee, who was multiple graded stakes-placed and the WTBA Champion Older Filly or Mare in 2008. And Allen and Susan Branch, too, have a Northwest connection. Susan is the daughter of longtime Washington breeders John and Doris Konecny and the Branch colors—blue and white checks with red chess emblem—are the old Czech-Mate Stable silks.

Glatt, who grew up on the family’s five-acre farm on Lee Hill, said he has 22 horses in training at Santa Anita. He finished ninth with 21 wins at the inaugural Emerald Downs meet in 1996 before moving his base to Northern California in 1997 and Southern California in 2000.
