Washington Cup VII has drawn 79 nominations for the Sunday, Sept. 13 stakes races.
One of the biggest days in Washington racing, Washington Cup VII features seven stakes events worth $50,000 each for an aggregate purse of $350,000. First post is 2 p.m.
Nine stakes winners are nominated to Washington Cup: Atta Boy Roy, Clair Annette, Gadget Queen, Hollywood Harbor, Knight Raider, Ladyledue, No Flies On Doodle, Noosa Beach and Peaceful Reign. And that doesn’t include Wasserman, who will defend his championship in the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic following his fast-closing fourth in the 2009 Longacres Mile.
In fact, two of the top five Mile finishers are expected to compete as Atta Boy Roy heads the field in the $50,000 Chinook Pass Sprint. Despite losing a shoe, Atta Boy Roy ran the fastest opening splits in the 74-year history of The Mile—:21 4/5, :44, 1:07 3/5—and was only beaten 1-½ lengths by Assessment.
In a new wrinkle, British Columbia-breds are eligible to compete in the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, Belle Roberts and Chinook Pass Sprint. Three B.C.-breds—two in the Belle Roberts and one in the Chinook Pass—are nominated as part of the inaugural Pacific Challenge Series.
Trainers Doris Harwood and Vann Belvoir nominated eight horses each, followed by Jim Penney with six and Howard Belvoir with five.
Entries for Washington Cup will be drawn at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Joe and Sally Steiner’s Quarter Chute Café.
