Medicine Creek rallied furiously for a three-quarter-length victory over Sharper Eagle in Friday’s featured Michael’s Toyota Purse for 3 year olds and up at Emerald Downs.

Medicine Creek rallied furiously for a three-quarter-length victory over Sharper Eagle in Friday’s featured Michael’s Toyota Purse for 3 year olds and up at Emerald Downs.

With Seth Martinez riding, Medicine Creek ran one mile in 1 minute, 36 4/5 seconds and paid $19, $8.40 and $5.80. Steve Koler is the trainer for owner Jack Zaborac.

Claimed for $4,000 on Aug. 16, Medicine Creek has reeled off two straight wins for Koler and Zaborac, with Martinez up for both victories. Each time, Medicine Creek came from the clouds to win at a mile.

“When I got him left last time, he smoked home,” Martinez said. “I figured we’d do the same thing tonight. “I had a lot of horse. Steve (Koler) has him very happy.”

Sharper Eagle, Juan Gutierrez riding, led in deep stretch but was overhauled by Medicine Creek. The runner-up paid $5 and $3.60. Last Time Around, a 10-1 long shot ridden by Deborah Hoonan-Trujillo, finished third and paid $5.20. Dirty Shirt, the 5-2 betting favorite, didn’t fire and finished sixth.

Leading rider Ricky Frazier reeled off four straight victories—riding the winners of the second, third, fourth and fifth races—and now has 149 wins through 85 days of racing. He needs nine wins in the final six days to break his own single-season mark of 157 wins set in 2007.

Frazier has nine four-win day, two five-win days and 11 three-win days.

Track notes:

• Olly Blast ($5.60) led virtually gate-to-wire in the second race for his 10th career victory at Emerald Downs. Frazier rode the 8-year-old Storm Blast gelding for trainer Bob Meeking.

• Meeking saddled two winners and is 16-for-71 at the meeting—a nifty 23 percent.

• Jockey Robert Burney continued his late-season surge with two wins and is up to 23 wins for the season.

• It was route night at Emerald Downs as six of the evening’s eight races were around two turns.

• Racing continues Saturday with nine live races. First post is 2 p.m.
