The Jaime Baseball Academy Cubs of Covington just captured their first state title July 19 at Bannerwood Sports Complex in Bellevue.
The Cubs stormed through the 16 and under Mickey Mantle State Playoff tournament winning all six of their games. The tournament began July 15.
The club was led by tournament MVP Alec Wilson who hit .667 with six RBIs and pitched five shutout innings in the championship game.
The team had five other all-tournament selections – Sean Hartnett pitched 12 innings with three earned runs and 16 strikeouts; Brian Olson hit .429 with a .667 on base percentage and seven RBIs; Chris Seubert hit .385, Jordan Johansen had four hits and threw five shutout innings and Spencer Hobson went .333 at the plate, pitched eight innings with three earned runs.
Shane Green hit .333 with two-run homeruns, Nick Lee pitched a three hitter, Brian Hartnett hit .444 and Derek Johnson made several game-saving catches in centerfield.
The Cubs qualified for Mickey Mantle Regionals, but have decided to play in another tournament next week in San Diego.
