Conks, Bears taken in MLB draft

Three local graduates were drafted in the 2015 Major League Baseball draft last week.

Kentwood

Conks grad Taylor Jones was drafted in the 35th round by the Chicago Cubs.

Jones currently attends Gonzaga University.

While at Kentwood he was named Male Athlete of the Years in 2012.

“Taylor was a terrific player for us at Kentwood,” coach Mark Zender said in an email.

“Taylor is a fantastic players and an even better young man. I know he’ll be heading back to Gonzaga to complete his senior year,” Zender said. “I am certain he’ll be drafted again next year.”

Tahoma

Two Bears were drafted in the Major League Baseball draft on June 10.

Tayler Saucedo was drafted in the 21st round by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Coach Russ Hayden said Saucedo is a “hard throwing lefty” with “good movement on (his) pitches.”

Hayden said Saucedo helped lead the Bears to state in 2011.

And Brian Olson was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 34th round.

“(He was the) best catcher I have coached in 23 years,” Hayden said referring to Olson.
