Class Included wins the $50,000 Seattle Handicap at Emerald Downs | Horse Racing

Michael and Amy Feuerborn of Maple Valley appear to have another top-class filly at Emerald Downs.

Michael and Amy Feuerborn of Maple Valley appear to have another top-class filly at Emerald Downs.

Last year their Sis’s Sis emerged from the claiming ranks to win two stakes and was voted the track’s Top 3-Year-Old Filly. Sunday, Class Included moved to the head of this year’s 3-year-old filly division with a powerful three-length victory in the $50,000 Seattle Handicap.

Ridden by Leslie Mawing at 117 pounds, Class Included ran 6-½ furlongs in 1minute, 15.68 seconds on a fast track and paid 6, $3.20 and $2.60. Washington Racing Hall-of-Fame trainer Jim Penny saddled the winner.

A Kentucky-bred by Include, Class Included is out of the dam A Classic Life, who also was a top racehorse for the Feuerborns while winning four stakes and honors as Top 2-Year-Old Filly in 2004.

“I’m really choked up, this is a big win,” Mike Feuerborn said in the winner’s circle after the Seattle Handicap. “It’s so special when you’re also the breeder.”

Carrabelle Harbor, ridden by Gallyn Mitchell at 121 lbs., gamely held second place and paid $8 and $4.40. It was three-quarters-of-a-length back to Awesome Woman, the 6-to-5 betting favorite ridden by Javier Matias at 118 lbs., and a $2.40 show payoff.

Previously undefeated Elusive Noise finished fourth, followed by Rossi reserve, Debbie’s Striker and Love Makor.

Content to stalk in fourth place while Carrabelle Harbor and Elusive Noise ran a quarter-mile in 21.55 seconds, Class Included allowed Awesome Woman the first run, and the second-time starter spurted to a narrow lead after four furlongs in 43.81.

But Awesome Woman and Carrabelle Harbor were no match for the winner Sunday. Class Included moved up on the turn, reached the leaders entering the stretch, took command a furlong out, and drew clear late.

“We’ve been training her behind horses, and she’s responded really well,” Mawing said. “I knew they were setting pretty fast fractions up front, we had the perfect trip.  Once she got by the leaders, I knew the race was ours.

“She galloped out really strong. I don’t think she’ll have any problem with more distance, and I think she’d love the turf, too.”

Penney agreed with Mawing’s opinion, and the answer will come in the $50,000 Irish Day Handicap at one mile on Sunday, June 26.

“She has a very good turn of speed, and she’s shown that she can gather herself and finish,” Penney said of Class Included. “This was a good field she beat today.”

Carrabelle Harbor fell on the gallop-out, and trainer Doris Harwood said the Harbor the Gold filly appeared to have heat exhaustion and was cooling out well at the barn.
