Championship meets wrap up Tahoma grad Derek Eager’s prep career | Track and Field

Derek Eager completed his high school career by nailing top throws in the state for the javelin and discus during June and July.

The next stop for the Tahoma graduate and state champion is UCLA.

Eager reached 230 feet, 6 inches in the javelin event June 24 in the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Nationals at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Tahoma High graduate pegged 197 feet, 1 inch in the discus at the Junior Olympic Region 13 Championship July 10 at Chief Sealth High School in Seattle.

Following his second-place finish in the Iowa Nationals, Eager made the 2010 International Association of Athletics Federations World Junior Championships, July 19-25 in Moncton, Canada.

He said it “was not a great meet for me, it rained the whole time, but it was a ton of fun.”

Eager said he stayed in a dorm with athletes from many countries including Italy, Ireland and Belgium.

“I saw a German guy throw 270 feet,” Eager said. “It was really fun to watch.”

Eager said it was also “cool because everyone there knows about UCLA. It was really fun talking with everyone and I’m really excited to start school.”

Eager won the javelin and discus event at the 4A state tournament in May. He took the gold in the javelin reaching 211-4 and the discus at 184-6.
