Carry On John, a consistent 6-year-old gelding, returned to the winner’s circle Friday with a neck victory over Westsideclyde in the $12,100 Pacific NW Business Products Purse at Emerald Downs.
With a perfectly-timed ride by Inoel Beato, Carry On John ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1 minute, 15 3/5 seconds on a fast track and paid $8.20, $3.80 and $2.60. H.R. Pat Mullens is the trainer for owner Ron Crockett, Inc.
Westsideclyde, ridden by Ricky Frazier, did everything but win the race. The 2007 Sprinter of the Meet set taxing fractions of :22 and :44 2/5, kicked clear past mid-stretch and just failed to last. Westsideclyde paid $3.60 and $2.20.
Ernie Owl, ridden by Anne Von Rosen, finished third and paid $2.60. The 5-year-old gelding has finished in the money in all eight starts this year (4-2-2). One Quick Brew finished fourth, followed by Connor’s Buddy, Skyattic, Leroi Victor and Gentleman Lawyer.
A Kentucky-bred by Boundary, Carry On John has won at least one race each of the last four seasons at Emerald Downs. His overall mark is 5-2-2 in 13 starts with earnings of $58,988.
Crockett, Emerald Downs’ all-time leading owner with 199 wins, moved into first place in the 2010 owners’ standings with 11 wins, one better than Michael & Amy Feuerborn, Sue & Tim Spooner and Howard Belvoir, all tied for second with 10 wins each.
Rewritten, the 7-to-2 morning line favorite in Saturday’s $75,000 Washington Oaks, could give Crockett his 200th Emerald Downs win.
Chuck Hilton of Gig Harbor won $1,000 by throwing a ringer in the weekly horseshoe pitch after the fifth race. Hilton was the first contestant to throw a ringer this season.
Tracy Turnure—Miss Washington USA 2010—was the celebrity contestant and came up a tad short on her throw.
