Bottom of the seventh heroics lifts Kentlake over Thomas Jefferson | Fastpitch Slide Show

Kentlake's Erika Smyth hits a single to drive in two runs to lift the squad over Thomas Jefferson in a key SPSL North match up Friday.

Kentlake came out on top Friday afternoon with a 4-3 win over Thomas Jefferson thanks to a big offensive outburst in the bottom of the seventh.

Erika Smyth, Kentlake’s second baseman, stood at the plate with Erin Crowley on second base and Lexi Engman on third.

It was the bottom of the seventh and Kentlake was down 3-2 to Thomas Jefferson.

There were no outs and Smyth wanted to put the bat on the ball.

“All I’m thinking is make good contact, score at least one run,” Smyth said. “Make them nervous. Put pressure on them.”

Smyth wanted to hit the ball up the right side away from the runners but she hit reliever Katie Jackson’s pitch up the middle.

No worries, though, Smyth said because Crowley and Engman are the “two fastest people on our team, definitely.”

That single was more than enough as Engman came across to tie the game up then Crowley came home, just beating the throw to the plate to score the winning run.

Smyth gives all the credit to her teammates, Engman who led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right field, and Crowley who laid down a bunt to move Engman into scoring position and was able to reach first base safely then make it to second when the throw went past the first baseman.

“It was just exciting,” Smyth said. “Our team has so much heart. Everyone’s contributing.”

Heading into this game, Kentlake was 5-1 in league play while Jefferson was 6-0.

The win puts Kentlake into second place behind Tahoma, 7-0 in South Puget Sound League North division play, with the Bears accounting for the Falcons only loss this season.

“Tonight we’re going to celebrate,” Smyth said. “Next week we’ll try to take it one game at a time.”

Kentlake takes on two tough SPSL North rivals, Auburn on Tuesday and Kentridge on Friday, and Smyth said they need to play tough to beat both teams as part of the goal to win every game the rest of the season.

On Friday, though, Smyth and the rest of the Falcons just enjoyed the win.

“This doesn’t feel real right now,” Smyth said. “I’ve never been happier.”
