Emerald Downs Director of Racing Bret Anderson released a list of 26 handicap weights for the 74th running of the $300,000 Longacres Mile, Grade III, Aug. 16.
California-based runners received the four high weights for the Mile. Johnny Taboada’s Autism Awareness and West Point Thoroughbreds’ Awesome Gem were set at 122 pounds apiece, while Dakota Phone and Sierra Sunset were assigned 120 pounds each.
Assessment, a double stakes winner at the meet for trainer Howard Belvoir, topped the locally based runners with a 119-pounds impost, while defending Longacres Mile champion Wasserman, also conditioned by Belvoir, is among three horses at 116.
Weights are vital since the race is limited to 12 starters with high weights preferred.
Owners for Awesome Gem were seriously considering shipping their horse to Emerald Downs and Autism Awareness is scheduled to arrive Tuesday. Sierra Sunset is already on the grounds for trainer Jeff Bonde, while trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said he was leaning toward running Crafty Power rather than Dakota Phone.
Vancouver-based runners Bank Emblem and Teide also are expected to ship to Emerald Downs for The Mile.
In addition to Assessment and Wasserman, other locals apparently in the field are Kruger Park, Atta Boy Roy and Gallon.
