What’s the future hold for the local AARP chapter?
The Maple Valley chapter of AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) is in its sixth year, and during the past five years we have done many events and hosted many informative speakers. However, during the past year or so, we have experienced a decline in total membership and also in active membership. We were unable, for 2008, to find someone who would/could serve as president. Fortunately, two members agreed to serve this year as co-presidents.
What has become apparent to the chapter’s board is that there are few who can or will serve in the very vital role of chapter leadership. The chapter can’t function without people who are willing to serve in leadership roles. Both the present and future success of the group is vitally dependent on members who will accept leadership responsibility.
With this thought in mind, the board is evaluating the future of the chapter.
We will be hosting a communitywide forum on Sept. 8, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Greater Maple Valley Community Center. We encourage you to come and share your thoughts on the future of the chapter.
At this meeting, we will consider the following:
• What is the role of the chapter in Maple Valley/southeast King County?
• Do we have members who can and/or will serve as chapter leaders?
• What other groups are serving the senior community?
• Are there other programs the chapter could sponsor that would benefit the senior community?

Too many people taking hand-outs is a problem, indeed
The article by Timothy Haugh (“Less handouts, more work,” Sept. 3, Reporter) was one of thr better ones I have read in some time.
In my opinion, he addressed one of many problem’s in todays society – that is, many people would rather accept hand-outs than work. I hope to enjoy many more articles by Mr. Haugh in the weeks to come.
