The Secretary of State’s Charity and Nonprofit Education Program is sponsoring a workshop focusing on board governance and special rules for faith-based nonprofits on Oct. 13 in Auburn.
The workshop will be held at the Northwest Family Church (3535 Auburn Way. S.) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with lunch provided.
“This workshop is tailored for faith-based nonprofit organizations,” said Charity and Nonprofit Education Coordinator Teresa Glidden. “We have many of these organizations that attend regular board governance and compliance workshops, but there are special rules and exemptions that apply only to them, so we wanted to make sure they have the opportunity to become aware of some of these issues. We’ll cover board governance, special rules and traps for the unwary, as well as tax issues, employment law and risk management.”
The workshop’s main presenter is Nat Taylor, an attorney with Ellis, Li & McKinstry, PLLC in Seattle. Taylor has 16 years of experience representing more than 100 church and other nonprofit clients on employment, governance, risk management, property and tax issues. He serves on the Washington State Bar Association’s nonprofit corporations committee. Taylor also is an elder in his local church and volunteers regularly at the Seattle Union Gospel Mission legal aid clinic.
There is a $10 per-person lunch charge to help defray the costs of the facility and catering. Registrants can pay online when they register by credit or debit card. Registration is limited and available online at www.sos.wa.gov/charities/training .
