Lake Wilderness Arboretum’s docent program and educational outreach provide a variety of enjoyable learning opportunities for people of all ages.

“In March, our group presented an informative talk at a garden club luncheon in Des Moines,” says Cindy Ostermann, docent co-chairman. “Visitors from Australia, Canada and the U.S. East Coast toured the arboretum as part of the Rhododendron Species Foundation’s 50th celebration in April and a garden club from Snohomish affiliated with the Northwest Perennial Alliance visited our gardens in May.”

The next free docent tour takes place June 21. On the third Saturday of each month from April through October, guided tours start from the gazebo at 10 a.m.

Signs are posted for tour location and parking. Arrange group tours by contacting tours@lakewildernessarboretum.org or 253-293-5103.

Lake Wilderness Arboretum also lends itself to a wide variety of educational programs.

Boy and Girl Scout troops can earn badges related to forests, plant species and the ecology of the surrounding area. Eagle Scout candidates work on various projects that enhance the arboretum. Second and seventh grade classes, high school groups and special needs students from the Tahoma School District use the arboretum to supplement their curriculum.
