Holly McHugh, a Portland, native has served as treasurer of the Arboretum’s Board since January 2012.
An avid biker who speaks Mandarin Chinese and loves to wander the gardens and forest during her free time, McHugh says the Arboretum’s plant sales inspire the landscape of her own garden.
In this interview, she explains how getting involved with the Arboretum lets her give back to the community.
How does the Arboretum contribute to Maple Valley?
By offering education related to conservation and horticulture. It’s also a beautiful location for the community to gather.
What part of the Arboretum inspires you the most?
Before I joined the Arboretum, I was not a fan of azaleas. After learning the story of the Smith-Mossman Garden, of the dedication of both Mr. Smith and Dr. Mossman to collect over 200 selections of the Western Azalea, the collection became an inspiration to me. It’s an example of the legacy we can leave behind when we find something we love and participate in that endeavor with our friends.
Meet McHugh this Saturday at the Arboretum’s booth at the Maple Valley Farmers Market.
