Maple Valley resident appointed to commission
On Aug. 23 Council Vice Chair Reagan Dunn introduced legislation to the Metropolitan King County Council to appoint Shontrana Gates-Wertman to the King County Civil Rights Commission.
“Shontrana Gates-Wertman is well qualified to represent District 9 on the King County Civil Rights Commission,” said Dunn in a media release. “Her experience as an attorney for Washington state and her work to help individuals overcome social and economic barriers add valuable expertise to the commission.”
The Civil Rights Commission is in place to raise community awareness and involvement on civil rights issue, the release stated.
Charity golf tournament is next week
The eighth annual Scramble for Safe Families Charity Golf Tournament presented by the Jennifer Beach Foundation.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn.

Wastemobile collection coming to Covington
A traveling household hazardous waste collection service is coming to Covington for three days from Sept. 8 to 10.
The Wastemobile will be parked at the Kent Fire Station No. 75, 15635 SE 272nd Street, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Residents will be able to drop off hazardous items including:
• pesticides
• oil-based paints
• automotive products
• fluorescent bulbs
This event is free. A media release stated this service is already paid for through garbage and sewer utility fees.
Seminar coming in October
Ken Sande, the founder of Peacemaker Ministries and Relational Wisdom 360, will present about building better relationships in Maple Valley on Oct. 1 and 2.
The seminar will be held at the Maple Valley Presbyterian Church from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2.
Food and childcare will be provided.

The Black Diamond Community Center clothing bank is looking for slightly used/clean kids clothing in all sizes.

Eagle Scout project to make Maple Valley a Purple Heart City
Chase Beyer is working on his Eagle Scout project by leading the city of Maple Valley in the process of becoming a Purple Heart City.
On Monday, Sept. 11 the city will read an official proclamation at its city council meeting.
Beyer will present plaques to the city and to the Greater Maple Valley Veteran’s Memorial Foundation.
Beyer, a member of Boy Scout Troop 711, along with other troop members will be building a case to display the plaques.
Black Diamond citizenship awards
The following residents were honored over the weekend at the Labor Days Festival.
Judy Watson received the Lifetime Commitment Award for giving more than 30 years of volunteer service to the community.
Dee Israel was named Citizen of the Year which is given to someone who provides outstanding service to Black Diamond during the past year.
Gerrie Garton was named Civil Servant of the Year for doing an outstanding job of serving the citizens of Black Diamond as an elected official or a civic employee.
Being honored with the Individual Community Service award was Johna Thompson.
Business of the Year was given to Gina Vaughn and Dan Ellis of The Smoke House and More.
And the award for Community Service Group went to Black Diamond Trails Coalition.
