Two people were injured early morning Jan. 1, 2019 on westbound state Route 18.

The incident happened around 4:15 a.m. east of the Weyerhaeuser Way exit.

The driver, 23 year old Jemal Henderson from Tacoma, and the passenger, 21 year old Dominic Neri from Maple Valley were reportedly traveling on westbound SR 18 when they struck an unoccupied, abandoned vehicle on the right shoulder, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The collision caused both vehicles to enter the road way with extensive damage to both — it was reported both vehicles were totalled.

Neri was transported to St. Frances with a possible broken arm, according to WSP.

Henderson was arrested for driving under the influence and was also transported to St. Frances as a precaution.

The WSP stated the cause of the incident was speed/inattention.
