With the holiday season in full swing, I would like to take a moment to remind everyone about the importance of keeping themselves and their families’ safe – during a time of year when many people tend to let down their guard. This month’s newsletter topic is family and personal security.
One of the most important aspects of general security is awareness. It is essential that you be aware of your surroundings regardless of where you are or what you are doing. For example, when entering and unfamiliar room, take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. Take note of the other people in the room, the general layout, your position in relation to exits or other doorways, and objects or obstacles you may need to avoid. This may seem quite basic, but it is nonetheless a good habit to get into (and to teach your children) whenever you enter an unfamiliar setting.
When you are out in public, avoid making yourself an attractive target to would-be criminals by appearing observant and aware of your surroundings. You are much less likely to become a victim of personal crime if you appear alert and aren’t flashy with money, jewelry or other expensive items. Stay on well lit streets at night, and whenever possible, travel with a group (or at least in pairs) rather than alone.
The secret to keeping your family safe (inside or outside the home) is to have a family security plan. In developing a plan, it is important to consider the daily routines of each family member and think of ways of making each of them safer as they go about their normal activities.
