The Corner of Love reaches from Maple Valley to around the globe | Slide Show

Tanya and Nelson Amador had a dream that began more than a decade ago in Maple Valley, and that dream is spreading steadily across the globe. Tanya and Nelson Amador had a dream that began more than a decade ago in Maple Valley, and that dream is spreading steadily across the globe.

The Maple Valley couple have been organizing trips bringing medical, dental and vision treatment, supplies and other humanitarian services to San Ramon, Nicaragua for the past 11 years through their Corner of Love Christian mission. The first step was one idea and one trip, and it has blossomed into nine missions this year.

The Corner of Love began in the sanctuary of the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church and the organization is now reaching around the world. There are chapters in 15 states including Florida, California, Arizona and Colorado. Chapters are forming in other countries including Canada, Japan, Switzerland and Bermuda. The list is growing by the day and by the mission.

Tanya Amador traveled to Japan in October and spoke at the Kyushu medical university in Fukuoka and Saga University.

Students from the Japanese schools will be able to join the mission and earn credits while working with the Corner of Love team in Nicaragua.

A Japanese company has donated 25,000 hepatitis B strips for mission. The medical personnel on the mission will be able to use the strips to test for hepatitis B and treat those afflicted.

Another Japanese firm donated nearly 50,000 strips to test for urinary tract infections, kidney disease and other medical conditions.

“This is such good news from far off places,” Tanya Amador said. “It is wonderful how different areas of the world are contributing. I think it is God’s hand at work. An international family of helping hands.”

The first mission team of 2011 will be in San Ramon from Feb. 19-26, the second team from Feb. 25 to March 5 and the third March 12-20.

The Amadors will be leading teams again in June and July.
