Sweepstake scam for $145,000 discovered | Black Diamond Police Blotter

May 26 SCAM: A resident was the victim of fraudulent activity. The victim received a letter and a check for $4,980.70 stating they had won a ‘sweepstake’ from Reader’s Digest. The instructions were to deposit the check and then to contact the name and number listed. When the victim called the number, the person said the amount of the check was issued to cover the taxes for the grand prize of $145,000. They were to deposit the check and then withdraw the funds to be delivered the following day and set up a meeting. After further investigation this sweepstake was determined to be a scam.

May 23

PARAPHERNALIA: 3rd Avenue. An officer stopped a a vehicle for expired tabs. The Department of Licensing status showed the owner of the vehicle had a suspended license. During the stop, the 22-year-old male was searched and an eyeglass container was found in his pocket that contained drug paraphernalia. During a K9 search of the vehicle, the dog alerted to the center console which had a plastic pill bottle containing a small amount of marijuana. Also found under the seat was more drug paraphernalia commonly used to smoke opiates. The male was cited for driving with a suspended license, possession of drug paraphernalia, expired tabs and no vehicle insurance

May 22

DUI: 231st Avenue Southeast and Southeast 288th Street. At about 2 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for expired tabs. The officer could smell alcohol when he contacted the 28-year-old-female driver. She admitted to having one drink earlier. The portable breath test reading was .127. She was cited for driving under the influence and expired tabs.

The vehicle was impounded and she was booked into Buckley jail.
