The Maple Valley City Council and city staff conducted a town hall meeting Monday to present the plans for the Summit Park and ball fields.
Greg Brown, the parks director, walked the audience through a series of slides outlining the project.
The 22-acre site is locate at state Route 169 and S.E. 276th Street, west of the Les Schwab store.
Brown gave a short history of the project noting the city purchased the land from the Tahoma School District in 2006 for about $750,000.
According to the information presented by Brown, the school district intended the site to be developed for community sports fields.
Staff and Council plan to conduct public meetings and create a stakeholder group to collect information about the types of recreation services that will be constructed.
Brown said the park would be built in two phases, with construction of phase one in 2011 and phase two in 2012 or 2013.
The city presentation stated funding of the project would, “include both public and private financing ‚Äì including a possible voter approved bond issue in 2011.”
One of the problems in designing and developing the park is the Bonneville Power Administration has a transmission line easement 375 feet wide running diagonally through the acreage.
The city listed the restrictions within the easement includes no light poles, backstops or landscaping over 20 feet high.
There can be no structures built over 1,000 square feet, no restrooms, no concession stand or metal bleachers in the easement.
The city is asking residents to apply to be a citizen at large to serve on the stakeholder committee. Citizens may also fill out a Web site survey.
