A pair of state lawmakers in the 47th District appear headed for re-election after Tuesday’s general election.

Democrats Geoff Simpson and Pat Sullivan were running to retain their positions in the House of Representatives for the district, which includes Covington.

By Wednesday afternoon, Sullivan had a large lead over Republican Tim Miller with 58 percent of the vote, with 100 percent of the voter precincts reporting.

Sullivan, a Covington resident, has held his office for four years.

Simpson initially had a larger lead of more than 10 percentage points on his challenger, Republican Mark Hargrove, when the first round of mail-in votes were posted. His lead was slimmer in later returns, with just shy of 53 percent of the votes going to him.

Hargrove finished ahead of Simpson in the primary election in August, but Simpson and his supporters steadfastly predicted a different result in the general election.

Simpson is a Kent firefighter and lives in Covington, another part of the 47th. He’s been in the Legislature since 2000.
