Students to promote safe driving in art contest

The Safe Driving Art Contest involves a theme related to school bus safety and distracted driving

Third and fourth grade students in the Tahoma School District will be participating in an art contest to promote safe driving on Friday, May 9.

The Safe Driving Art Contest involves a theme related to school bus safety and distracted driving. It is being sponsored by the Washington State Patrol, Maple Valley Police Department, Tahoma School District Transportation and King County Emergency Medical Services.

The winner of the contest will receive a laptop computer and their artwork will be displayed on a billboard located near the intersection of state Route 169 and Cedar Grove Road.The Washington State Patrol and Maple Valley Police Department have been partnering in Operation S.A.F.E (Speed, Aggressive Driving, Fail to Stop and Enforcement), a proactive and educational approach to keeping students safe when exiting and entering school buses while stopped. A one day enforcement emphasis in February saw 25 violations that included speeding, cellular phone use and “paddle board” violations.
