State fire marshal sends out words of caution as Independence Day approaches

Saturday is Independence Day and retail fireworks stands opened Sunday.

State Fire Marshal Michael Matlick send out a word of caution to residents as the fireworks season nears.

“Personal fireworks require personal responsibility,” Matlick said.

In 2008 there were 785 fireworks incidents reported to the state fire marshal’s office with 27 percent of these incidents without adult supervision.

This included 267 injuries, 95 were children under the age of 14.

“There is much that can be done to protect children and others from fireworks injuries,” Matlick said, “First, set family boundaries, only adults should light fireworks. Second, fireworks should not be readily available to tempt the curiosity of young children and should be stored in a secured location to prohibit their access. Third, check with your local fire or police department for additional restrictions in your area.”

The fire marshal said it is important to discuss safety with children.

“Summer weather conditions make grass and other vegetation dry and vulnerable to fire,” Matlick said. “Use care in selecting the area where you will be discharging fireworks.”

The fire marshal’s office wrote in the release that the fireworks residents purchase must be legal to possess and discharge. It is important residents know the dates and times fireworks are allowed in the community. The office noted residents should stay away from high-powered illegal explosive devices such as M80’s and M100’s. The damage caused by illegal fireworks can be life altering and even result in death.

The three B’s of fireworks safety are:

• be prepared and have water nearby and pets indoors;

• be safe, only adults should light fireworks, and

• be responsible and clean up fireworks debris.

Attending a public display is a safe and fun way to enjoy fireworks. To learn about a community fireworks display near by visit the fire marshal’s Web site at http www.wsp.wa.gov/fire/fireworks.htm.
