Computer help offered at community center

The Greater Maple Valley Community Center’s 50 and older program is offering a computer assistance and education course.

Volunteers will be on hand to assist in computer repairs, personal tutoring, upgrade installs and more.

Appointments can be arranged by called 425-432-1272.

Kentwood graduate completes boot camp

Kristian Ramos, 2017 Kentwood graduate, graduated from Marine Corps boot camp in San Diego on Sept. 22.

Spooktacular Halloween House of Lights

From now until Nov. 1 from dusk until 11:30 p.m. people are welcome to drive by and view lights synchronized with music and other props.

The scene is set at Crest Air Park, 30211 176th Ave SE in Covington.

A can food drive benefiting the Black Diamond Senior Center and Food Bank will also be taking place.

Save the date, pasta dinner coming soon

The Sons of Italy Black Diamond Lodge 1809 is hosting its fall pasta dinner from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29 at the Black Diamond Community Center.

This is the 80th year they have held this annual dinner, a release stated.

Tickets are available at the door or before hand by calling Laverne Casini at 253-630-5093. Adults are $15, children 6-12 years old are $7 and kids under 6 are free.

‘I Love the Cedar River’ meeting

The seventh annual “I Love the Cedar River” meeting and open house is set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19 at the Lake Wilderness Lodge in Maple Valley.

Residents will be able to learn about flood-risk reduction projects, habitat restoration projects, recreation and other related activities on the Cedar River, according to a media release.

There will also be a question and answer session.

Make a Difference Day is Oct. 28

Both the Black Diamond and Maple Valley community centers will be hosting Make a Difference days beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.

The day beings with volunteer sign-ups and a complimentary breakfast.

Walk-ins are welcome but it is recommended you pre-register to volunteer by called the Greater Maple Valley Community Center at 425-432-1272.

This year work in the community will happen at both community centers, the Maple Valley Foodbank, Maple Valley Arboretum, Lake Wilderness Park and many other locations.

City gym opens in Black Diamond

The city of Black Diamond’s gymnasium opened and it the site for sports and other activities.

Groups can rent the space by calling Brock Deady, volunteer gym coordinator, at 253-263-9091.

There is a $3 drop-in fee and no charge for those under the age of 18.

Karate and basketball are currently available as well as volleyball that happens on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Jazzercise is also offered at 8:30 a.m. on weekdays.

The gym is located at 25511 Lawson Street.

Open house scheduled for new skate park

A new skate park is coming to Maple Valley in 2018 and an open house is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Lake Wilderness Lodge.

Those who attend the open house will join the city of Maple Valley and Grindline Skateparks to discuss the future of this park, Summit Park.

Attendees will learn about the project, meet the designers and contribute ideas on elements you would like to see at the park.

Free pizzas and beverages will be provided.

Annual fundraising breakfast set for Oct. 20

The New Horizon School, 1111 South Carr Road in Renton, is hosting its annual fall fundraising breakfast on Friday, Oct. 20.

This event is free to attend. You can RSVP at www.new-horizon-school.org/annual-breakfast/.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and breakfast will be served at 7:45 a.m. Donations will be accepted.

Free job fair at Highline College

From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11 Highline College will be hosting nearly 60 local employers looking for full-time, part-time or temporary employees.

The event will take place in Building 8 on Highline’s main campus.

This event is free and open to the public. Attendees should be prepared to talk with recruiters, dress professionally and bring extra copies of resumes.
