Busses in the Tahoma School District will receive extra special treatment during a special enforcement operation being conducted by the Washington State Patrol and Maple Valley Police on Monday, Feb. 24.
Law enforcement will be working two separate school bus routes during the morning and afternoon, looking for violators of school bus laws, according to a Washington State Patrol press release.
Operation S.A.F.E. — which stands for Speed, Aggressive driving, Fail to Stop and Enforcement — is designed as a proactive and educational approach to keeping students safe when exiting and entering stopped school buses.
The release states that a one day survey last year showed that there were over 1,500 violations involving school bus stops in the state. Thirty-two of those violations included vehicles passing on the right; where students exit and enter the bus.
This project began in December 2013 after complaints about an excessive amount of violations along school bus routes in various cities throughout the Puget Sound area.
The upcoming operation will concentrate on violators within the Tahoma School District, which encompasses most of the Maple Valley area. A one day emphasis in the area last week saw 25 violations that included speeding, cellular phone use and “paddle board” infractions, according to the release.
