Classes in the Tahoma and Kent school districts are canceled today as a result of snowstorms that arrived overnight in the central Puget Sound area, creating difficult winter driving conditions that are expected to continue and possibly worsen later today.

Weather forecasts include cold temperatures that could make driving hazardous tonight. Officials advised commuters and anyone else who must drive to check on road conditions before heading out.

Rainier Christian Schools also canceled classes today, but Green River Community College planned to be open as scheduled.

Weather forecasters predicted snow showers throughout today.

State Department of Transportation officials said Wednesday that crews would be out treating and clearing state highways during the winter blast. Local and King County crews also were braced for the situation.

Forecasts predict temperatures below freezing through the Christmas holiday, with heavy snow and winds in the mountain passes and throughout eastern Washington. Motorists who drive safely help themselves and other drivers, as just one spinout can block traffic for hours and cause other incidents, DOT officials noted.

“We have all of our trucks on the road, and we appreciate all the drivers who made the decision to limit trips today,” said DOT Secretary Paula Hammond. “This helps us clear the roads faster and get them ready for those who do need to travel.”
