The communities on both sides of the Green River or Kummer Bridge received some comforting news yesterday from the state Department of Transportation.
Economic Development Director Andrew Williamson reported to the Black Diamond City Council during the scheduled meeting Thursday the state Route 169 bridge will be open the Fourth of July weekend unless “something major” happens.
“They said it would have to be something significant to push the date out,” Williamson said.
Williamson said representatives of the department met with business members and political leaders from Black Diamond, Maple Valley and Enumclaw. According to the director the department representatives called the meeting, “due to rumors and discussions about the bridge.”
Williamson said the crews are working “seven days a week during daylight hours” to hit the deadline.
The transportation department representatives reported to the group there were some drainage problems and some work will go on after the opening.
“There may be periodic lane closures and don’t expect the landscaping to be done until fall,” Williamson said.
The surrounding communities are planning a celebration event when the bridge is opened.
