On May 31 five people were displaced after their home caught fire in the 26000 block of 174th Ave. SE in Covington.
Firefighters from the Kent Regional Fire Authority and Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety were dispatched around 1:30 p.m., according to a press release from the fire authority.
The report was smoke coming from the eaves of the home and when firefighters arrived they found roughly about half of the single story home in flames.
The power line feeding into the home had also burned all the way through and was arcing in the driveway, according to the release.
The firefighters decided to fight the fire from the outside due to the danger from the live wire and the instability of the home.
Puget Sound Energy was contacted to turn off the power to the line.
Once that was done, firefighters could change their approach to fighting the flames.
The two adults and three children in the home were not injured.
On June 1 the cause of the fire had been determined after investigation.
The fire was caused by an overheated extension cord in the garage.
Kyle Ohashi, captain and public information officer for the Kent RFA, warns the public to “remember that extension cords (are) not designed to be used in place of permanent wiring.”
