School levy forum in Black Diamond

Black Diamond Community Center will be the site of a community forum on Enumclaw School District’s $8.4 million capital facilities and instructional technology levy.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15.

According to Kathleen Michael, chairwoman of 4RKids Committee, a citizens’ group campaigning for the levy, the forum will include presentations by district officials, plus time for discussion and questions. She said the session will have an “open house-type setting.” Michael said.

The levy election will be on Feb. 3. Ballots will be mailed by the King County elections department to voters beginning Jan. 14.

If approved, the four-year levy would buy Enumclaw Middle School a new roof and updated heating systems there and at Westwood Elementary School and Enumclaw High School. and put technology in the hands of students in every classroom.

In addition, new technology for classrooms districtwide would include document cameras, SmartBoards, computers and mobile laptop labs with wireless connections.

Starting in 2010, the levy would permit tax revenue collections of $2.9 million the first year at 87 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. By 2013, the revenue would be $1.2 million at a rate of 33 cents per $1,000, or $99 for the owner of a $300,000 home, district officials said.

The district has been using money for repairs and technology purchases from its general fund, and officials said that’s getting harder to do as the state continues cutting spending.
