Ribbon cutting, dedication set for Aug. 17
The city of Covington invites the community to celebrate phase two of the community park with a ribbon cutting and dedication of the Margaret Harto Pavilion.
The celebration is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 at the Covington Community Park, 180th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 240th Street.
Following the celebrations, Covington’s outdoor family concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. featuring Recess Monkey (a kid-orientated pop music group).
Memorial “HERO” Workout for Officer Moreno
The Kent firefighters, Local 1747 and Kent CrossFit have teamed up to honor fallen Kent Police Officer Diego Moreno with a Memorial “HERO” Workout on Aug. 11 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Donations can be made during the CrossFit event or at any U.S. Bank branch under the “Diego Moreno Memorial Fund.”
The workout is free to everyone and tailored for all fitness levels.
Kent CrossFit is located at 7405 S. 212th St. #101 in Kent.
12 session program coming soon
The Rainier Foothills Wellness Foundation and National Alliance on Mental Illness have come together to sponsor the Family to Family Education Program for families of those with serious mental illness.
The 12 sessions will begin Tuesday, Sept. 11 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Enumclaw.
The course will cover information about schizophrenia, mood disorders (bi-polar disorder and major depression), obsessive compulsive disorder and basic information regarding medications, recovery and rehabilitation.
Skills will also be developed to handle crisis situations, how to listen and communicate and self care for dealing with worry and stress.
According to a media release, the curriculum was written by a mental health professional who has a family member living with mental illness. Trained NAMI family member volunteers will lead the 12 session program.
This course is designed for family members of those with a mental illness, not the individual with the illness. The course is also not for family members who have children under 16 with a mental illness.

BECU awarded scholarship to local student
Cameron Masters was among 80 local student members who were awarded either a $2,500 or $3,500 scholarship from the BECU Foundation.
The foundation awards the scholarships to those who demonstrate community service as well as academic and leadership potential, a media release from BECU stated.
Correction: community meals changes locations
In last week’s edition of the Reporter, it was stated the Community Meal Program that has been hosted by Grace Roads Church in Black Diamond would not be serving at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Black Diamond.
It was meant to say the new location of the meal program would be at St. Barbara’s church.
This change began Aug. 1.
The meals are served weekly on Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The meals are free and open to the public.
