Proposed sales tax currently failing

52.4 percent of ballots counted have voted no on the city of Covington’s Proposition No. 1.

The city of Covington’s Proposition No. 1 is currently failing with 52.4 percent no and 47.6 percent yes.

Proposition No. 1, according to the King County Elections website, is a sales and use tax for transportation improvements.

If approved, the “proposition would authorize a sales and use tax at a rate of two-tenths of one percent (.2 percent) to be collected from all taxable retail sales within the city,” the elections website stated.

The increased tax would go toward “paying for or financing the costs of transportation maintenance and improvement projects,” the site continued.

A total of 6,187 ballots have been counted.

The latest count was completed at 3:43 p.m. Nov. 7, according to the King County Elections website. The next count is scheduled for 4 p.m. Nov. 8.
