Peat moss stored under metal canopy catches fire Sunday at Covington business

As of Sunday morning, the cause of the fire did not appear to be suspicious. No other buildings were involved in the fire.

In the early morning hours on Sunday Kent Fire and Maple Valley Fire responded to a reported structure fire at a business in the 27500 block of Covington Way Southeast.

When firefighters arrived they found peat moss and possibly other materials stored under a metal canopy had caught fire. The small blaze was knocked down and prevented from spreading to other equipment or packaged materials nearby, according to information provided by the Kent Fire Department, which serves Covington and King County Fire District 37 in addition to the city of Kent.

The business apparently specializes in both organic and inorganic all-natural growing media for the production of horticultural industry plants, according to Kent Fire officials. An investigator from the department was working to determine the cause of the fire and make contact with the owners of the business, which is closed on weekends.
