Officials said the local version of the nationwide, annual community bonding against crime exceeded the expectations of the Police Department, which hosted the event and also worked with neighborhood block watch captains to coordinate smaller events around the city.

Officials said about 120 attended, with some representing their respective neighborhoods. Also in attendance were members of the City Council, including Councilman Glenn Smith, who read a proclamation signed by Mayor Laurie Iddings in recognition of the evening’s activities..

The King County Sheriff Department provided staff and equipment, with representatives from its marine unit, the local Explorer post, and search and rescue. The new Guardian One helicopter hovered over the lake and demonstrated some of its flying capabilities.

Representatives of the state Department of Corrections, Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety and Communities that Care were also on hand for the event.

Police Department representatives had crime statistic information on display and officers on hand to answer any questions from citizens.

Children and their parents enjoyed games and activities, including a ride provided by Real Life Church that toured the park. The church also set up an inflatable slide which was a popular activity for youngsters, event organizers noted.
